At least two people were killed after a shooting at a Madison, Wisconsin, school on Monday, according to a CNN report, citing a statement from police.

The statement came shortly after a news conference at which police mistakenly reported four people were killed in the shooting.

Confirming that the suspected shooter was among the dead, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes during a press conference said that the incident took place at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison, the state capital, where multiple injuries were reported earlier.

The private institution teaches some 400 students from kindergarten through 12th grade, the Madison Police Department posted on social media.

At least five people were transported from the scene and taken to area hospitals, Barnes added.

Barnes said that the police believe that the suspect, who was found dead inside the building, was a student at the school.

“Officers located a juvenile who they believe was responsible for this deceased in the building,” CNN quoted Barnes as saying.

“We believe the shooter was a student at the school, yes,” the chief later confirmed when asked.

Barnes also said the police department did not fire their weapons.

Video posted from the scene on social media showed a massive emergency response, including police, ambulance and fire vehicles.

“Multiple injuries have been reported,” the Madison Police wrote on social media earlier. “This remains an active and ongoing investigation.”

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden was briefed on the school shooting, CNN report quoted the White House spokesperson as saying.

“The President has been briefed on the school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin. Senior White House officials are in touch with local counterparts in Madison to provide support as needed,” senior deputy press secretary Emilie Simons was quoted as saying.

Gun control and school safety have become major political and social issues in the U.S. where the number of school shootings has jumped in recent years.

There have been 322 school shootings this year in the US, according to the K-12 School Shooting Database website. That is the second highest total of any year since 1966, according to that database - topped only by last year’s total of 349 such shootings.
