At least three people were killed and two others were injured after a boat overturned near New York on Sunday. Officials from the New York Fire Department, the New York Police Department and the US Coast Guard responded to the incident which took place at the Ambrose Channel. According to NBC News, the authorities reached the spot after NYPD received a distress call around noon.
Police officials noted that the boat capsized in the Newport Walk area, which is popularly known as the Breezy Point. In a statement to NBC News, the Coast Guard described the area as “a neighbourhood at the tip of Queens’ Rockaway peninsula.” As per the report, six people fell into the water after the boat capsized.
Out of them, five people were rescued from the boat and were taken to a local hospital, where three people died. NYPD said that one of those injured is in a critical injury and the other one is now stable. Meanwhile, two of the victims of the incident were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital and three were taken to Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook, where emergency medical crews were waiting.
4 out of 5 people unresponsive
The Coast Guard told NBC News that four of the five people who were rescued from the sinking boat were unresponsive. To take control of the situation, Coast Guard crews performed CPR on some of those who were unresponsive.
As of Sunday night, the Coast Guard said that it is still searching for one person missing in the water. There’s no additional information on the victims as of now and it is unclear what kind of boat capsized.
While it is unclear what exactly happened, NYPD said that it does not appear that another vessel bumped into the boat. The Coast Guard said it was notified of a “vessel taking on water” and described the boat as “sinking” in a release. The matter is still under investigation.
