Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has announced a separate investigation into a shooting at former US President Donald Trump’s golf course.
Trump was the target of “appears to be an attempted assassination” at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The accused, who has been identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh, has been arrested and the FBI is investigating the case. The agency is also investigating Trump’s assassination attempt in July when a 20-year-old man, Thomas Matthew Crooks, shot at him at a rally in Pennsylvania and a bullet grazed his ear.
Even as the FBI is investigating the case, DeSantis said that the “people deserve the truth” and announced a separate state-level investigation.
“The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club. The people deserve the truth about the would be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee,” said DeSantis in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

As per The Associate Press, US Secret Service agents stationed near Trump at the golf course noticed a muzzle of an AK-style rifle poking through a shrubbery in the golf course around 400 yards away. Then, an agent fired and dropped the rifle and the man in the shrubbery dropped the rifle and fled the scene in a car. He was later stopped by law enforcement in a neighbouring county.
In an email to supporters, Trump said he was “safe and well”.

“As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety,” said Biden in a statement.
