According to a diplomat, the UN Security Council is scheduled to convene on Sunday. Israel has asked the council to denounce Iran’s invasion of Israel and label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist group.
Speaking under anonymity, the diplomat stated on Saturday that the proposed meeting time was 4 p.m. ET (2000 GMT).
In a letter to the president of the council on Saturday, Gilad Erdan, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, asked that the council call an emergency meeting.
“The Iranian attack is a serious threat to global peace and security and I expect the Council to use every means to take concrete action against Iran,” Erdan wrote in a post on X.
Iran risked a significant escalation as it launched a barrage of explosive drones and fired missiles towards Israel late on Saturday, marking its first-ever direct strike on Israeli soil, even as the US promised “ironclad” support for Israel.
