Ukrainian forces retreat from Avdiivka amid growing Russian threat

In a significant strategic move, Ukrainian military forces have pulled back from the eastern city of Avdiivka to prevent being surrounded, as confirmed by army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. This marks a pivotal development on the frontline since Russian forces seized Bakhmut in May last year. In a statement posted on Facebook, Syrskyi emphasized the decision was made to safeguard the lives and well-being of soldiers, stabilize the situation, and reposition troops to more advantageous defensive positions. He commended the soldiers for their valor and highlighted their efforts in inflicting significant losses on Russian forces. Earlier announcements by Ukrainian commanders indicated the withdrawal from certain positions in Avdiivka, with preparations underway for establishing new defensive positions and fortifications to counter various scenarios. As the two-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion approaches, Ukrainian forces face mounting pressure along the frontline, exacerbated by depleted ranks, exhaustion, and a shortage of artillery shells, compounded by delays in a major US funding package. Avdiivka, subjected to relentless bombardment by Russian forces, has witnessed recent breakthroughs, with small groups of advancing troops penetrating the city. Despite reinforcement efforts by the newly appointed army chief, concerns loom over the city’s potential fall, given its strategic importance in controlling the area surrounding Donetsk. The capture of Avdiivka would not only grant Russia control over crucial territory but also serve as a symbolic victory for Vladimir Putin amid upcoming elections. Once a thriving industrial hub, Avdiivka has been reduced to ruins by ongoing conflict, with a dwindling civilian population unable to evacuate due to intensified fighting. The dire situation in Avdiivka mirrors past battles, raising concerns among Ukrainian soldiers and analysts about the high human cost of maintaining control. Amidst leadership changes and strategic reassessments, the fate of Avdiivka remains uncertain, with the specter of further casualties looming large. With inputs from agencies
