Four years after the start of hostilities, the Kremlin reports that the conflict in Ukraine has transformed into a “much larger confrontation” with the West. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov maintains that while Moscow is open to a diplomatic end, the current situation has been escalated by the direct intervention of European and American interests.

Ukraine’s partners want to ‘destroy our country’ with clash between West & Russia, says Kremlin
Moscow claims Western interference has escalated the Ukraine conflict into a broader struggle for national survival.

The Kremlin has declared that the ongoing hostilities in Ukraine have evolved into a far more expansive struggle involving Western nations. Four years after the initial deployment of Russian forces across the border, Moscow suggests that the scope of the battle has shifted from a localised mission to a broader geopolitical clash. Despite this escalation, Russian officials maintain that they are still willing to pursue their objectives through dialogue, provided the conditions are met by their counterparts.

Escalation into a global standoff

According to the Kremlin, the involvement of international powers has fundamentally altered the nature of the campaign. Dmitry Peskov, the primary spokesperson for the Russian government, argued that the participation of European states and the USA has forced a change in the classification of the fighting. He noted that the original special military operation has been transformed by external interference.

“Following the direct intervention in this conflict by Western European countries and the United States, the special military operation de facto turned into a much larger confrontation between Russia and Western countries, which had and continue to harbour the goal of destroying our country,” said Peskov. This perspective highlights a belief in Moscow that the West seeks the total collapse of the Russian state rather than just a territorial resolution.

The search for a diplomatic exit

While the rhetoric regarding Western involvement remains sharp, the Kremlin insists it has not closed the door on negotiations. The Russian administration claims its goals remain unchanged but suggests that the method of achieving them could still involve high level discussions. Peskov reiterated that the framework for peace is already established from their side, though the implementation remains stalled.

“We are continuing our efforts to achieve peace, our position is very clear and consistent. Now everything depends on the actions of the Kyiv regime,” Peskov stated when questioned on the feasibility of a settled peace.

Uncertainty surrounding future talks

Despite the expressed hope for a political solution, there is currently no set timetable for when representatives might meet again. The logistics and timing for any potential discussions with Ukraine remain unconfirmed.

Moscow admits that while the desire for a resolution exists, the practical steps to reach the negotiating table are not yet finalised. Referring to the potential for future meetings, Peskov remarked, “We truly hope that this work will continue.” For now, the conflict remains in a state of flux as both sides navigate the heavy involvement of global powers.

Who are the Kurds, who could lead the next phase of Iran war?

Iran's Kurds, many in exile in Iraq, are preparing for possible cross-border operations against Iran with potential US backing amid ongoing US and Israeli strikes. All major Kurdish opposition groups have formed a coalition aiming to overthrow Iran's Islamic Republic and seek Kurdish self-determination. Kurds, a large ethnic group without a state, see the current conflict as a chance to advance their long-standing goal of an independent homeland despite past US betrayals.
