A 32-year-old man has been arrested in the UK for allegedly raping a 20-year-old Indian-origin woman in a racially aggravated attack in Walsall, West Midlands Police said.
The suspect was detained early Monday in Perry Barr and is currently being questioned. The assault took place on Saturday night in the Park Hall area, where officers found the woman in distress after being attacked by a man she did not know.
According to police, the attacker was described as white, in his 30s, with short hair and wearing dark clothing. CCTV footage of the suspect had been released on Sunday as part of the investigation.
The Sikh Federation (UK) confirmed the survivor is Punjabi. “We can now confirm from local sources the young woman that was subject to a racially aggravated rape in Walsall is a Punjabi woman,” said Dabinderjit Singh of the federation, adding that a neighbour heard her screams during the “vicious attack.”
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer called it “an absolutely appalling attack on a young woman” and said officers are working tirelessly to bring the culprit to justice. “We have teams of officers recovering evidence and building a profile of the attacker so that he can be brought into custody as soon as possible,” he added.
