The United Kingdom has enforced sanctions against four Israeli citizens, labeling them as “extremist settlers” who have perpetrated violent assaults on Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. These sanctions include strict financial limitations and travel bans on the four individuals, whom Britain accuses of committing “egregious abuses of human rights.” David Cameron, the UK foreign secretary, expressed grave concern, stating, “Extremist Israeli settlers are menacing Palestinians, often resorting to forceful means and coercion, thereby displacing them from their rightful lands.” Cameron underlined the illegality and intolerability of such behavior, calling on Israel to take decisive action to curb settler violence. He lamented the frequent lack of follow-through on promises made by Israel to address these issues. The UK Foreign Office highlighted an unprecedented surge in settler violence in the West Bank over the past year, attributing it to Israel’s failure to intervene effectively, leading to a culture of near impunity for extremist settlers. The US has also recently imposed sanctions on four Israeli individuals allegedly involved in settler violence in the West Bank. Among those targeted, Moshe Sharvit and Yinon Levy are accused of engaging in physical aggression, intimidation tactics, and property destruction to displace Palestinian communities. Sharvit, known for his involvement in an unauthorised outpost in the Jordan Valley, has a history of harassment towards Palestinian communities, including allegations of giving ultimatums to villagers and engaging in violent confrontations. Yinon Levy, who established an outpost in the south Hebron hills, has similarly been accused of contributing to the harassment of Palestinians in the region. The imposition of sanctions follows complaints from Israeli human rights organizations to various foreign governments, urging action against these settlers. These measures coincide with escalating tensions in Rafah, Gaza, where Israel’s intention to carry out military operations has sparked international concern. Cameron has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a sustainable ceasefire, stressing the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis in the region.
