Onboard its cutting-edge maritime research vessel, Jaywun, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has announced that it has successfully completed the first-ever Atmospheric Research Expedition in the Persian Gulf. The Agency was the first agency in the world to carry out atmospheric research from Spain to Abu Dhabi, travelling more over 10,000 km onboard Jaywun between December 2022 and January 2023, passing through 25 nations and eight seas and oceans. The groundbreaking Atmospheric Research Expedition in the Gulf of Arabia conducted a thorough investigation into the movement and subsequent conversion of nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons. The campaign also aimed to determine the extent to which pollution from the Persian Gulf is dispersed to other areas and how much it contributes to the creation of ozone in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). EAD, the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C) of The Cyprus Institute in Cyprus, and the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany worked together on the mission. Furthermore, scientists from the Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory in France and the University of Bremen in Germany provided support for the project. When the research gets to the model simulation stage, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia will also be engaged. (With agency inputs)
