The top officer of the U.S. Space Force revealed on Monday in Tokyo that they are thinking about creating a unit in Japan. This move highlights the significance of working together with Japan in space activities, especially because China is advancing its capabilities in this domain. General Chance Saltzman, who leads the newest branch of the U.S. military, mentioned that they are currently in the early stages of planning and determining the exact role of this headquarters. This decision comes as the U.S. Space Force, established in December 2019, is increasing its presence in Asia. In November, it set up a unit within the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii, followed by a subordinate unit in South Korea in December. Saltzman, the head of the U.S. Space Force, didn’t specify where this new unit in Japan would be located, but he mentioned that Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo is a possibility. He emphasized the need for a “mission planning process” to decide the unit’s responsibilities, size, and other related matters. He mentioned that there isn’t a fixed timeline for its establishment yet, but once the planning is complete, they will have a clearer idea of when it will happen. The U.S. government is strengthening its collaboration with Japan and other allies in space activities, especially in the face of increased competition with nations like China and Russia. Saltzman highlighted the growing partnerships between the U.S. Space Force and Japan, emphasizing the important role both countries’ collaborative efforts can play in ensuring safety, security, stability, and sustainability in space, which has become a more dynamic and hazardous security environment. He stated, “We will work together with Japan and other like-minded nations to establish responsible norms of behavior and prevent conflicts in the space domain.” Regarding the situation concerning Taiwan, Saltzman expressed concern about China’s assertive actions and stressed the importance of maintaining a competitive rather than confrontational relationship between the U.S. and China. He suggested that by maintaining a network of sensors through international partnerships, the United States and its allies can respond more effectively to aggressive actions and prevent further escalation. China has been increasing military pressure on Taiwan, which it considers a part of its territory, even if it means using force. Earlier on Monday, Saltzman met with Japan’s Defense Minister Minoru Kihara in Tokyo, and they agreed to further enhance their cooperation in outer space activities, according to the Japanese Defense Ministry. To strengthen their combined space operations, the U.S. Space Force and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force held the first-ever Space Engagement Talks in July at Yokota Air Base.
