Two Israeli soldiers were killed and 24 injured, two of them critically, in a drone attack from Iraq early Thursday morning, the IDF announced on Friday.
According to a Times of Israel report, the slain soldiers have been identified as Sgt. Daniel Aviv Haim Sofer, 19, a signals officer cadet in the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion, from Ashkelon, and Cpl. Tal Dror, 19, an IT specialist with the Golani Brigade’s 13th Battalion, from Jerusalem.
According to the report, citing an IDF probe, two explosive-laden drones were launched from Iraq in the attack, one of which was shot down by air defences and the second impacted an army base in the northern Golan Heights.
According to AFP, Israeli army radio also confirmed the strike emanating from Iraq overnight Thursday.
Two UAVs were launched from Iraq and crossed into Israeli territory in the Golan Heights area, AFP quoted the radio as saying.
“One UAV was intercepted by the air force, while the second exploded at a military camp north of the Golan Heights,” it added.
Public broadcaster Kan also reported the strike originated from Iraq and hit the Golan Heights.
