The incident occurred on Monday as quoted by the officials that two mountaineers, Hugo Lucio Colonia Lazaro, 65, from France and Hong Khy Park, aged 66 from South Korea died while climbing Nepal’s Ama Dablam mountain in the Himalayas.
Lazaro, the French climber was struck on the head by a falling piece of ice during his expedition last week. According to Subhash Shreshtha of the Himalayan Vision Treks and Expedition company, the climber was immediately rescued by helicopter and flown to Kathmandu for medical treatment. Despite immediate evacuation, he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the capital.
While the other South Korean mountaineer lost his life scaling the same peak. Homnath Bhattarai from the J’Vill Nepal Treks company said that Park had been climbing alongside five other members of his team when he suddenly collapsed. There were multiple attempts to save him, but he died before he could receive further medical help.
Ama Dablam, which stands at 6,814 metres (22,356 feet) in Nepal’s Solukhumbu district, is renowned for its dramatic shape and steep slopes. It has an unpredictable weather condition which dominates the skyline along the popular Everest Base Camp trekking route.
Often called the “Matterhorn of the Himalayas,” Ama Dablam is a popular choice for experienced climbers seeking a challenging ascent short of the world’s highest peak. Nepal has issued around 400 permits for Ama Dablam. The autumn season also attracts most of the tourists.
The death of both the climbers add to a growing list of mountaineering tragedies in the country this year. A similar incident has been experienced before, when a Korean hiker died while descending a trekking peak in the same Solukhumbu region.
