US President Donald Trump “remains in excellent overall health”, his physician, Captain Sean Barbabella, announced after the Republican leader underwent a preventative MRI, as concerns over his health grow.
Barbabella said that the 79-year-old president’s advanced imaging of the heart and abdomen came back “perfectly normal”. He also explained that Trump’s MRI was taken in October “because men of his age group benefit from thorough evaluation of cardiovascular and abdominal health”.
The release comes as Democrats, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, press for the scan results amid concerns about Trump’s age heading into a second term. His sudden October 10 trip to Walter Reed Medical Center, outside the usual annual exam, spurred speculation about what prompted the check-up.
‘Excellent health’
But in a memo released by the White House, physician Sean Barbabella said the advanced imaging was purely preventive, intended “to identify issues early, confirm overall health, and ensure he maintains long-term vitality.”
“Overall, his cardiovascular system shows excellent health. His abdominal imaging is also perfectly normal. All major organs appear very healthy and well-perfused,” Barbabella said.
MRI scans, or magnetic resonance imaging, are commonly used to detect serious conditions such as tumours, strokes and multiple sclerosis, as well as more minor issues like muscle tears and inflammation.
Pressed by reporters in recent weeks, Trump, the oldest person ever sworn in as US president, had sidestepped questions about the purpose of the visit, directing inquiries to his medical team.
‘No idea’
The White House had earlier declined to clarify why Trump underwent an MRI during an October physical exam or what part of his body was scanned.
Aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump told reporters it was “OK with me” to release the MRI results.
When a reporter pressed him on which body part had been examined, Trump replied: “I have no idea. It was just an MRI — what part of the body? It wasn’t the brain, because I took a cognitive test and I aced it.”
