The Pentagon has sent Colin Carroll, chief of staff to Deputy Defence Secretary Stephen Feinberg, on administrative leave as US President Donald Trump’s crackdown on military leaks continues in full force. Carroll is the third high-ranking official to be suspended under the investigation of the leak.
The recent dismissal happened just a day after two other political appointees were placed on leave following a probe into potential leaks of sensitive information.
An official told Politico, the leaks currently being investigated involve sensitive matters such as military strategies concerning the Panama Canal, the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Red Sea, Elon Musk’s contentious meeting at the Pentagon regarding China, and a temporary halt in intelligence gathering related to Ukraine.
Carroll, a Marine Corps Reserve officer, was previously fired by the Joe Biden administration for creating a hostile environment while chief operating officer of the Pentagon’s former Joint Artificial Intelligence Centre.
Dan Caldwell, senior adviser to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, and Darin Selnick, the deputy chief of staff at the Defence Department, were removed from the Pentagon by security personnel and had their access to the building revoked while an investigation is underway, according to the official. Both Caldwell and Selnick have prior ties to Concerned Veterans for America, the nonprofit organisation formerly led by Hegseth.
The incidents intensified Democratic demands for Hegseth’s resignation. Calls for the Pentagon chief to step down grew louder after he disclosed sensitive information in a Signal group chat with senior officials regarding US military strikes in Yemen.
