Trump unveils ‘Great Healthcare Plan’ framework, stops short of replacing Obamacare

US President Donald Trump has unveiled a healthcare proposal that includes cost-cutting ideas but does not provide enough details on replacing the Affordable Care Act.

“I’m calling on Congress to pass this framework into law without delay, have to do it right now, so that we can get immediate relief to the American people,” Trump said as he announced the “Great Healthcare Plan”.

However, there is little to no literature on the plan, nor is there a timeline for related congressional action, and it is also unclear whether Republican leaders support the proposal.

“There’ll be ongoing conversations, and we hope to be able to support with specific language for the legislation,” Mehmet Oz, one of Trump’s top health care deputies, said.

What does the plan include?

Trump’s healthcare agenda blends active initiatives with previously stalled goals. He aims to lower domestic drug costs by pegging them to international prices and intends to pivot billions in federal funding away from insurance companies directly to citizens.

Additionally, the plan seeks to reinstate the ACA’s cost-sharing reduction subsidies, which he originally cut, while mandating “maximum price transparency” for both hospitals and insurers.

The proposal, at the same time, fails to mention whether there is a replacement for the ACA, the 2010 law that reportedly helped more than 20 million Americans get health coverage. It also falls short of including new ideas to expand America’s health-care system.

Trump’s proposal arrives as Republicans look to define their platform for the upcoming midterms, elections expected to hinge on cost-of-living concerns like healthcare. With voters increasingly frustrated by soaring premiums and the recent expiration of federal ACA subsidies, the party is under pressure to address the financial strain on American households.

Dems criticise plan

Meanwhile, the lack of information on the proposal has invited criticism from the Democrats, who have mocked the administration’s language for calling his proposal a “plan”.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren told the Washington Post, “Donald Trump’s new plan is a Band-Aid for the full-blown health care crisis he and Republicans in Congress created.”

Democrats quickly rejected Trump’s proposal as “pitiful” and “stale,” arguing that past price-transparency measures have failed to lower costs for families. They contend the framework is a “Band-Aid on a bullet hole” that ignores the doubling of premiums following the expiration of ACA tax credits. Rather than pursuing “concepts of a plan,” Democratic leaders are urging Republicans to join their successful House effort to reinstate the subsidies that lapsed on January 1st.
