United States President Donald Trump is set to address a joint session of Congress for the first time in his second term, performing a victory lap after 43 days in office.
The speech coincides with the administration’s efforts to radically restructure the federal government, combat illegal immigration, and reinterpret America’s foreign policy.
The speech, centered on the theme of “renewal of the American dream,” will showcase his administration’s accomplishments and set the stage for upcoming priorities. Key issues such as the Ukraine war, immigration, and economic policies are expected to feature prominently in his address.
Stand on the Ukraine War
Trump is expected to present a plan to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, following a tense Oval Office meeting last week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The meeting stalled progress on a US-Ukraine mineral resources deal, which was seen as a step toward peace. Trump has repeatedly criticised Zelenskyy, both publicly and privately and his speech will be closely monitored by officials in Kyiv, Moscow and Washington for signals on his next steps and willingness to reengage with Ukraine.
Defence of Musk’s Doge moves
The president is expected to defend billionaire Elon Musk’s efforts to reduce the size of the federal government, which have sparked concerns among voters and lawmakers. Trump has praised Musk’s actions as necessary to combat waste and fraud, but recent polls show mixed public opinion. A Quinnipiac University survey found that more than half of respondents believe Musk has too much power, while a Pew Research Center poll revealed that 54% hold an unfavourable view of him.
Rationale for high costs, tariffs
Trump will address rising costs and his administration’s tariff policies, including the planned 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico set to take effect Tuesday. While acknowledging potential consumer impacts, Trump argues tariffs are essential to boost U.S. manufacturing. The speech will also outline steps taken to tackle inflation, a growing concern among Republicans.
Migration policy
Since taking office, Trump has implemented sweeping immigration reforms, including suspending asylum and launching a mass deportation program. However, dissatisfaction with the pace of arrests by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has prompted consideration of further actions. Trump is expected to call for additional funding to support his deportation efforts.
Trump-Democrat tussle or tradition
Breaking from tradition, Trump’s address may reflect his combative style, contrasting with the unifying tone typically adopted by past presidents. Michigan Sen. Elissa Slotkin will deliver the Democratic response while some prominent Democrats plan to skip the speech. House Democrats are expected to bring guests affected by Trump’s policies, emphasizing their opposition to his agenda.
As Trump takes the podium, his speech will not only outline his vision for the future but also set the stage for ongoing political battles in a deeply divided Congress.
