US President Donald Trump on Friday expressed gratitude to Iran’s leadership after the country reportedly cancelled the executions of hundreds of protesters detained during a brutal crackdown.
“I greatly respect the fact that all scheduled hangings, which were to take place yesterday (Over 800 of them), have been cancelled by the leadership of Iran. Thank you!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
Over the past two weeks, Trump had repeatedly threatened military action against Iran to support protesters, amid reports from rights groups that Iranian security forces had killed thousands.
However, the president has now indicated he will hold off on intervention, saying on Wednesday that he had been informed the killings had stopped.
Trump also dismissed reports on Thursday that Gulf officials — specifically from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman — had tried to dissuade him from striking Iran.
He said it was Iran’s actions, not external advice, that influenced his decision.
“Nobody convinced me - I convinced myself,” Trump told reporters later Friday as he left the White House to head to Florida for the weekend.
“They didn’t hang anyone. They cancelled the hangings. That had a big impact.”
