After US President Donald teased that America will be signing a “major trade deal” with a “big and highly respected” nation, speculations started to become rife that the country Trump is talking about might be China or India . However, it turns out the United Kingdom will be clinching the gold medal in the race.

A person familiar with the matter told The Washington Post that Trump will announce a trade agreement with the UK on Thursday morning. The deal will become the first one administration will sign with dozens of trading partners standing in line to do the same. The race to sign a bilateral deal with the United States began after Trump, in April, announced tariffs on more than 70 nations worldwide. However, they quickly implemented a 90-day pause on the tariffs, allowing the countries to hold negotiations.

Experts remain sceptical about trade deals

On Wednesday night, the president teased that a trade deal would be announced with a big nation soon. “Big News Conference tomorrow at 10:00 A.M., The Oval Office, concerning a MAJOR TRADE DEAL WITH REPRESENTATIVES OF A BIG, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED, COUNTRY. THE FIRST OF MANY!!!” Trump wrote on his social media platform, TruthSocial.

The White House and officials from the United Kingdom have declined to comment on the matter. Meanwhile, experts are sceptical about the deal, with many thinking that any agreement reached in such a short amount of time would be less likely to alter trading barriers to a great extent.

However, the administration officials have suggested Trump might first reach agreements that would serve as frameworks for future negotiations. The news of the agreement between the US and UK was first reported by The New York Times and was seen as a victory for the British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The UK premier visited the White House in February and shared an invitation from British monarch King Charles III for a historic state visit , charming the Republican firebrand. Usually, a free trade agreement can run into the thousands of pages and is usually the product of months. Hence, it will be interesting to see how the deal between the two nations would pan out.
