Trump slaps 25% extra tariff on India over purchase of Russian oil

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to slap 25 per cent additional tariff on India over the purchase of Russian oil.

With this 25 per cent tariff, India will face at least 50 per cent tariffs — among the highest in the world.

This 25 per cent tariff over the purchase of Russian oil is on top of the 25 per cent tariff that Trump had previously imposed on India on July 31 as part of the broader rollout of tariffs on more than 60 countries.

As per the executive order, the additional 25 per cent tariff over the purchase of Russian oil will come into effect on August 27.

However, for goods shipped before Aug. 27, previous tariff rates will apply until Sept. 17.

The development comes after days of Trump slamming India for the purchase of Russian oil and accusing the country of funding the Russian war on Ukraine.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump last week said that India remains the largest buyer of Russian energy along with China “at a time when everyone wants Russia to stop the killing in Ukraine”. With such purchases, he said in a post on Sunday, India does not care “how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA”.

Since Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India has bought discounted Russian oil. In recent days, Trump has slammed India for the purchase of Russian oil as he has been left red-faced domestically from the failure to end the war in Ukraine.

At the same time, India and the United States are also engaged in complex negotiations for a free trade agreement. As with trade deals with other countries like the United Kingdom, India has sought to keep the politically sensitive agriculture and dairy sectors out of a deal, Trump has rejected the proposal and has pushed for their inclusion. He has also pushed for India to import genetically modified (GM) crops under the deal. India considers GM crops illegal.

Trump plunges India-US ties to new low

Trump’s 50 per cent tariff is only one part of his campaign against India.

As Firstpost's Madhur Sharma has previously noted, Trump has crossed every red line of India since assuming office: Trump has meddled in the Kashmir issue, equated India with Pakistan, undermined India’s position on Operation Sindoor, and aligned himself with jihadists and Islamists from Pakistan to Turkey.

Trump has also gone soft on China, India’s principal adversary, and has rolled back initial tougher stance after China used its near-monopoly over rare earths as a leverage, leading to not just a rollback of tariffs but also the rollback of export restrictions on critical technologies.

By undermining India on every count, Trump has put at risk decades of bipartisan progress of more than three decades in both the countries in improving the relationship by shedding the baggage of the Cold War when the two countries were on the opposite sides.
