 "Trump holds 'productive call' with Canadian PM Carney, plans meeting after election")
US President Donald Trump on Friday said that he held a “productive call” with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and that the two leaders agreed on many things including meeting after upcoming Canada’s election.
“I just finished speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney, of Canada. It was an extremely productive call, we agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Carney and his office have not yet commented on the call, which follows the new leader’s pledge to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States and precedes Trump’s anticipated tariff announcement on April 2.
Historically, the United States and Canada have been close allies and trading partners; however, relations have soured since Trump, a Republican who assumed office in January, disrupted the partnership with tariff threats and remarks suggesting Canada could become the 51st US state.
Carney, who took office in mid-March, has called for a snap election on April 28.
