During her seven-day visit to Sri Lanka, Navi Pillay will meet with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and human rights activists. She'll also visit the country's former war zone in the north and east, where thousands of ethnic Tamil civilians were allegedly killed as the quarter-century war ended in 2009.

The U.N Human Rights Council in March passed a resolution calling on Sri Lanka to more thoroughly investigate alleged war crimes committed by government troops and separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.
