The United States and Cuba announced a new deal on Wednesday to re-open embassies in their capitals after more than 50 years, marking a historic restoration of diplomatic ties severed since the Cold War.

Although Barack Obama has eased several imposed prohibitions on trade and travel that have existed between the two countries since the Cold War, many still remain in place. Moves to relax embargo legislation are still met with Republican resistance in Congress.

The timeline shows fourteen key events, after the Cuban revolution in 1959, which have influenced the trajectory of US-Cuba relations over the past five decades.
