Tibetan party suggests Rome as alternative venue for peace summit

Dharamsala: A day after the World Peace summit was cancelled and shifted out of Cape Town in South Africa, a Tibetan political party in Dharamsala suggested Rome as the alternative venue for the congregation of peace laureates’. The World Summit of Nobel Peace laureates, which was scheduled for this month in South Africa, was cancelled and shifted out of the country, owing to the denial of a travel visa to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. Reuters[/caption] Extending gratitude to the laureates who protested against the South African government’s refusal to permit the Dalai Lama, The Tibetan National Congress, an independent Tibetan political party said, “This is a major victory for justice and for peace.” “We thank these esteemed Nobel laureates for standing on the side of justice, and for standing up to the Chinese government, the only regime in the world currently imprisoning a Nobel Peace laureate,” TNC President Jigme Ugen. On September 30, TNC wrote to the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates suggesting Rome as an appropriate alternate venue. TNC’s letter noted that the Secretariat is based in Rome where eight Nobel Summits have been hosted to date. “While the current summit should be held in a freely- accessible city like Rome, we strongly support holding a future summit in Cape Town, once the South African government puts the interests of its own people before the interests of the Beijing regime,” said Ugen.
