Irish consumers are being urged to immediately stop using nearly 60,000 Tower-brand air fryers sold in recent years due to a fire hazard linked to a manufacturing defect, the country’s consumer watchdog said.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) issued a safety warning following a recall by the manufacturer. The affected air fryers may overheat and catch fire, potentially causing injury or even death.

Multiple models being recalled

The models under recall include the T17023 Tower 2.2 litre Manual Air Fryer; T17061BLK Tower 4 litre Manual Air Fryer; T17067 Tower 4 litre Digital Air Fryer; T17087 Tower 2 litre Compact Manual Air Fryer; and T17129L Vortx 8 litre Dual Basket Air Fryer.

These appliances were manufactured between 2020 and 2023 and sold across major retailers in the Republic of Ireland, including Argos, Tesco, DID, Dealz, Lidl, Amazon and through the Tower Housewares website.

No incidents have been reported in Ireland, but there have been confirmed cases in the United Kingdom of the affected air fryers catching fire.

Owners are advised to unplug their appliance and check the rating label on the bottom to see if it matches any of the recalled models. If so, they should stop using it immediately and contact Tower Housewares via its website or by emailing rproduct@customersvc.co.uk.

The CCPC’s Grainne Griffin said the recall involves a serious defect. While she did not issue a direct quote, she emphasised that it was crucial for consumers to check their model numbers, as continuing to use the affected units could be unsafe.

“This recall covers five Tower air fryer models with a dangerous manufacturing defect,” the CCPC stated. “Almost 60,000 affected units have been sold in Ireland so it’s vital that consumers who have a Tower air fryer check their model. If their model is affected, it is not safe to use.”
