 "Thousands protest 'corrupt' government in Haiti")
Port-au-Prince (Haiti): About 2,000 people in Haiti’s capital are protesting against a government they say is corrupt and ineffective.
The protesters called today for the departure of President Michel Martelly as they marched past Port-au-Prince’s cinderblock shanties and burned piles of tires.
It was the latest anti-government demonstration this year to draw a crowd of this size. In September, several thousand people marched to criticize the Martelly administration for not doing enough to keep down the cost of living.
Martelly is a former pop star who was sworn in as president last year. Many Haitians hoped his government would improve their lives following the 2010 earthquake but some say he has fallen short of their expectations.
The government had no immediate public reaction.
