After getting the maximum prison sentence for the crimes on Thursday, a convicted serial arsonist took a minute to gesture and smile at the victims. A Utah judge sentenced Calliope Mlynar, 20, to five years to life in prison after she pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and arson. Prior to learning their fate, Mlynar told the judge that they did not believe imprisonment was necessary because Mlynar was “not trying to hurt anybody and nobody died.” The judge, however, disagreed. Mlynar was detained in December of last year after they set fire to their apartment building in Provo on Christmas morning. According to local station KSTU, Mlynar also acknowledged using gasoline to ignite six further unintentional fires. The Christmas fire did not cause any injuries, although it did demolish some units. According to Chief Lynn Schofield of Provo, the city’s sporadic fires ended following Mlynar’s arrest. The judge was told by the victims that they were terrified for their lives and horrified by the fires’ devastation. One victim, who was able to escape her unit on Christmas with her 5-year-old child in time, said, “It was easily the scariest experience that I’ve ever been through in my life.” “That still has an impact on me today.” Mlynar was sentenced to time behind bars as well as complete restitution of $55,000, according to KSTU.
