At least five workers were killed and several others injured after a powerful explosion tore through a private firecracker factory in Chinna Kamanpatti village near Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, on Monday morning.
The blast occurred during working hours and triggered a chain of smaller explosions, sending thick smoke and flames across the area. Locals said the workers had little time to escape as the fire spread quickly.
Firefighters rushed to the scene and are still working to control the blaze. Ongoing explosions from leftover firecrackers are making rescue efforts difficult.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. Early reports suggest there may have been safety violations, but the exact cause will be confirmed after a detailed probe. District officials and forensic teams have also visited the site to collect evidence.
Sivakasi, a major hub for firecracker production, has seen several such accidents in the past due to poor safety standards in small factories. This latest tragedy has again raised concerns about enforcement of safety regulations.
The state government is expected to announce compensation for the victims’ families, while demands for stricter factory checks grow louder.
