Sweden urges swift NATO membership amid rising Russian threat

Sweden’s Defense Minister, Pål Jonson, has emphasized the urgency of the country’s NATO membership, citing the need to counter Russia’s threat. Expressing frustration over the prolonged approval process, Jonson remains optimistic about eventual approval from Turkey and Hungary. “We do not want to write off Russia as a threat because Russia has … shown evidence of endurance [in Ukraine]. So we have to stick to it and we do that in the best way by strengthening our national weaknesses and becoming fully integrated into NATO as soon as possible,” Jonson told the Guardian. In May 2022, Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While Finland formally joined in April this year, Sweden awaits approval from Hungary and Turkey. Jonson, speaking in Helsinki, stated that NATO allies “strongly supported” Sweden’s application, emphasizing Sweden’s contribution of “important military resources” and “better strategic depth.” Despite assurances from Turkey’s President Erdoğan, the decision on Sweden’s accession protocol faces delays. Hungary’s intentions also remain uncertain, despite earlier statements by Prime Minister Orbán. Jonson, from the Moderate party, remains optimistic about Sweden’s NATO future, affirming, “We’re going to form an alliance, and I have no doubt that it will happen.” Regarding recent unrest near the Russian-Finnish border, Jonson stressed the importance of the relationship with Finland, stating it contributes to regional security and stability. The night before the Nordic Defence Cooperation (Nordefco) summit in Stockholm, Jonson highlighted its significance. Defense ministers from Nordic and Baltic regions convened for the first time to discuss security arrangements, addressing critical infrastructure, defense cooperation, and assisting Ukraine.
