A suicide bombing in a Pakistani army base has killed at least 23 people on Tuesday, an official said. The Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack. The early-morning attack targeted a base in Dera Ismail Khan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, near the Afghan border, according to a local official who spoke on condition of anonymity. “Many of them were killed while they were sleeping and in civilian clothes so we are still determining if they are all military personnel,” the official added. A new group affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban called Tehreek-e-Jihad Pakistan said that the assault began at around 2:30 am with a “martyrdom attack” by one fighter before others stormed the compound. In an exchange of fire between the security forces and the attackers that followed the attack, at least four security personnel were killed and 16 injured, police said. During the gunfight, the police gunned down two terrorists, according to a report by ARY news. Following the attack, fresh contingents of police were rushed to the site, according to the police. An emergency was declared in district hospitals while all schools and colleges were closed due to the attack. WIth inputs from agencies
