In the 2024 General Election, Suella Braverman is standing as the Conservative candidate for Fareham and Waterlooville in the 2024 General Election. Suella has represented the people of Fareham since 2015, being re-elected in 2017 and 2019, on both occasions increasing the share of the vote for the Conservatives.

She has held roles including serving on the Education Select Committee, acting as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Treasury, and serving as a Brexit Minister until her resignation in November 2018 due to objections to the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement. In February 2020, Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed her to the Cabinet as Attorney General, a position she held until September 2022.

Suella made a little bit of history in 2021 as the first Cabinet Minister to have a baby in office. A new law, known as ‘Gabriella’s Law’ in honour of my daughter, has been enacted to allow me to take maternity leave and resume my position afterward. From September 2022 to November 2023, she served as Home Secretary, appointed by both Prime Ministers Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Her main focuses included halting small boat crossings across the Channel, implementing common-sense policing, and ensuring the safety of the British population.

Early life

Suella Braverman, born Suella Fernandes on April 3, 1980, in Harrow, London, is a British Conservative Party politician and lawyer of Goan Indian heritage. She attended Heathfield School, an independent girls’ school in Ascot, before studying Law at Queens’ College, Cambridge, where she graduated with honours.

After completing her education, Braverman pursued a career in law, specialising in public law and judicial review. She was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 2005 and practiced as a barrister at No5 Chambers in London, focusing on constitutional and administrative law. Her legal background equipped her with expertise in issues surrounding human rights, immigration and governmental affairs.

Political career

Braverman entered politics and was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Fareham in Hampshire in the 2015 general election. She quickly gained attention within the Conservative Party for her articulate advocacy of conservative principles, including free markets, individual liberty, and the rule of law. Her rise through the party ranks was steady, marked by her appointment as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union in February 2020.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson appointed Suella Braverman as the Attorney General for England and Wales and Advocate General for Northern Ireland in February 2020.
