A South Korean Navy plane crashed in the southern city of Pohang on Thursday (May 29), news agency Yonhap reported, quoting fire officials. Local authorities confirmed that four people were aboard the plane when it went down.
Two people have been confirmed dead by authorities, as per reports.
News agency Reuters quoted officials as saying that it was a navy patrol plane. The crash occurred at around 1:50 pm local time, according to officials.
Eyewitnesses saw smoke rising from the mountains where the plane reportedly crashed, according to Yonhap. The South Korean navy confirmed that a P-3 patrol aircraft crashed in Pohang this afternoon.
South Korean Navy in a statement earlier said it was probing the reason for the crash and working to determine the status of the four people.
The four people included two officers and two non-commissioned officers, though their full identities have not been confirmed.
“A P-3 maritime patrol aircraft that took off at 1.43pm for landing and takeoff training from an air base in Pohang crashed at a nearby location at around 1.49pm, due to an unspecified reason,” the navy said in a statement, according to Yonhap.
An emergency official reported that rescue workers and fire trucks were sent to Pohang after residents reported a plane crash followed by an explosion, according to the Associated Press.
