South Africa’s national and provincial elections are scheduled to take place on May 29, as announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office on Tuesday.
“I call on all South Africans to exercise their democratic right to vote and for those who will be campaigning to do so peacefully, within the full observance of the law,” Ramaphosa’s office said in a statement.
Political analysts anticipate that challenges such as record power cuts, inadequate service delivery, and high unemployment rates could adversely impact the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party, led by Ramaphosa, in the elections. This situation poses a threat to the party’s parliamentary majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994.
