Many US-made satellite-guided munitions in Ukraine have been rendered ineffective by Russian jamming technology, prompting Kyiv to stop the use of certain Western-provided armaments after their effectiveness rates plummeted, according to senior Ukrainian military officials and confidential internal assessments obtained by The Washington Post.
Russia’s jamming of the guidance systems of advanced western weapons, such as Excalibur GPS-guided artillery shells and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), has significantly weakened Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory. This jamming affects weapons with ranges of up to 50 miles and has prompted Kyiv officials to urgently request assistance from the Pentagon for upgrades from arms manufacturers.
Russia’s jamming tactics have compromised Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory as it failed to utilise high-tech western weapons, such as Excalibur GPS-guided artillery shells and the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), forcing Ukrainian officials to seek upgrades from the Pentagon and arms manufacturers urgently. This capability has allowed Moscow to regain the initiative and advance on the battlefield.
HIMARS rocket launchers, supplied to Ukraine by the U.S., have been rendered “completely ineffective” due to Russian electronic jamming systems. These launchers, capable of firing U.S.-made rockets up to 50 miles, have fallen victim to Vladimir Putin’s forces’ electronic warfare strategy.
The Russian jamming system operates from the ground, projecting a “cone” of interference into the sky, preventing these weapons from communicating with satellites to guide them accurately toward their targets.
The documents obtained by The Washington Post also reveal that the success rate of U.S.-designed Excalibur shells dropped to less than 10 percent before Ukraine’s military stopped using them last year. The HIMARS launchers, capable of firing U.S.-made rockets up to 50 miles, have also been rendered “completely ineffective” by Russian electronic jamming systems.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden administration announced an additional $275 million in military aid to the war-stricken Ukraine. The announcement came as Kyiv struggles to hold off advances by Russian troops in the Kharkiv region.
The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken announced the package on Friday and said that the proposal was previewed on Thursday by two US officials. He maintained that the aid is part of our efforts to help Ukraine repel Russia’s assault near Kharkiv.”
