The outlet suggested that a gas leak caused the blast. It said that the smell of gas was detected before multiple explosions at around 8 am on Friday. The fire was such that it was visible from several places across the city.
The report further said that around 40 people were rescued from a nearby building. It said that at least seven ambulances from across Rome were dispatched to the site.
Among those injured are a firefighter, several emergency medical workers, at least eight police officers, some passersby, and local residents, according to the report.
