Democratic Representative Mikie Sherrill has defeated Republican former New Jersey General Assembly member Jack Ciattarelli to become the next governor of New Jersey, according to Decision Desk HQ. The victory marks a significant win for the Democratic Party in its first major election cycle since the start of President Donald Trump’s second term.
Sherrill, a four-term congresswoman representing a district in northern New Jersey, overcame a strong challenge from Ciattarelli, who was making his third bid for the governor’s office after narrowly losing to Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in 2021. Murphy, limited by state law, was unable to seek another term.
New Jersey, one of only two states holding gubernatorial elections this November, saw polls close at 8 p.m. Eastern Time as voters decided between Sherrill and Ciattarelli in a race that drew national attention.
