A senior regional official announced on Monday that Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, the deputy commander of Russia’s 14th Army Corps, has been killed in Ukraine. Alexander Gusev, the governor of the Russian region of Voronezh, declared Zavadsky dead “at a combat post in the special operation zone” but provided no other information. Russia uses the term “special military operation” to refer to the conflict in Ukraine, which is now nearing its second anniversary. According to the investigative news site iStories, Zavadsky was the seventh Major General whose passing has been officially recognised by Russia, making him one of the 12 senior officers to have been declared killed since the conflict began. As the Ukraine was grinds on, top Russian officer deaths have decreased, which military analysts have in some cases attributed to Ukrainian success in monitoring careless communications. As a former tank commander and highly decorated officer, Zavadsky was described by Gusev as having suffered “transfixing pain” upon his death. (With agency inputs)
