Samsung takes on OpenAI’s ChatGPT, unveils its own generative AI bot called Gauss

Samsung has unveiled its groundbreaking generative AI model, Samsung Gauss, at the Samsung AI Forum held on Wednesday. Named after the esteemed mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, renowned for his contributions to the normal distribution theory. The launch of Gauss is indicative of how device manufacturers, especially smartphone and cPC makers are pursuing AI and all that it has to offer for their consumers. The announcement took place at the annual Samsung AI Forum in Seoul, a flagship event hosted by Samsung Research and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology since 2017. Developed by Samsung Research, the Gauss model is already being used internally at Samsung to enhance employee productivity within the company, with plans to extend its applications to various product functionalities in the future. The Samsung Gauss model consists of three integral components: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. The Language component, described as a generative language model, aims to elevate work efficiency by assisting in tasks such as email composition, document summarization, and translation. Beyond workplace applications, it holds the potential to enhance consumer experiences by enabling smarter device control. Importantly, the model’s versatility extends to both cloud-based and on-device applications. The Code component introduces a coding assistant named “code” designed to facilitate in-house software development for companies. Developers benefit from an interactive interface that supports functions like code description and test case generation, streamlining the coding process. The Image component is dedicated to effortlessly generating and editing images. It empowers users with the ability to make style changes, and additions, and convert low-resolution images to high-resolution, showcasing its versatility in visual content manipulation. Samsung underscores the on-device applicability of these models, emphasizing the protection of consumers’ private information. Furthermore, the company actively addresses safety concerns through its AI Red Team, a dedicated team focused on scrutinizing security and privacy issues at every stage of AI implementation, from data collection to service deployment.
