Russia’s FSB security services announced on Monday that a Russian man who was allegedly intending to blow up two court buildings for Ukraine had been arrested and charged with terrorism.
Since deploying soldiers into Ukraine more than two years ago, Moscow has documented hundreds of sabotage attacks on Russian territory, most of which it has blamed on Kyiv and its allies.
The FSB added that the man, who appeared to be in his mid-forties, was discovered “placing unknown objects in construction waste” close to a Tambov train station.
Upon closer examination, the items turned out to be “two homemade explosive devices” that the man intended to go off close to two courthouses in the city, according to reports.
“He was detained by a security guard who arrived on the scene, and an operational and investigative team of the Federal Security Service was called,” read the statement.
The FSB claims that the suspect was enlisted by Ukrainian special services to carry out the attack early this year and that he frequently accessed websites that supported Ukraine.
Ukraine frequently disputes accountability for acts of sabotage inside Russia, blaming internal turmoil and domestic resistance to the conflict—which is in its third year—instead.
