Just days ahead of Republic Day celebrations, intelligence agencies on Saturday issued an alert warning of possible terror threats to New Delhi and several other cities across the country.

According to intelligence inputs cited by news agency ANI, Khalistani outfits and Bangladesh-based terror organisations may attempt to carry out attacks ahead of January 26. As a precaution, Delhi and multiple cities nationwide have been placed on high alert.

Intelligence sources said Punjab-based gangsters are increasingly being used as foot soldiers by Khalistani and other radical handlers operating from abroad. These handlers are allegedly exploiting local criminal networks to further their agenda and pose a threat to internal security.

The alert noted that such gangsters are active across Haryana, Delhi-National Capital Region, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, and are gradually establishing operational links with Khalistani terrorist elements.

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) has also flagged that Punjab-based gangsters are “acting as foot soldiers for Khalistani and radical handlers operating from abroad”, ANI reported, citing sources.

Security stepped up ahead of Republic Day

In view of heightened security arrangements ahead of the Republic Day parade on January 26, North District Police conducted a series of simulated mock drills at crowded and vulnerable locations to assess preparedness and response time.

Around four mock drills were carried out earlier in January 2026 at sensitive locations across North Delhi, including the Red Fort, ISBT Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Khari Baoli, Sadar Bazar and several metro stations.

The exercises were aimed at strengthening anti-terror preparedness and sensitising both the public and security agencies to remain vigilant during potential terror-related incidents.

Meanwhile, Republic Day celebrations will see at least 30 tableaux roll down Kartavya Path, showcasing India’s cultural heritage and developmental achievements.

‘Alienating India will hurt America’: US Republican draws hard line, backs New Delhi over Pakistan

US Congressman Rich McCormick highlighted India's economic and strategic value to the US, contrasting it with Pakistan, which he said brings no meaningful investment into America. McCormick and Congressman Ami Bera emphasized that US companies are investing in India, not Pakistan, and warned that sidelining India would harm US interests. McCormick acknowledged US-India trade tensions over Russian oil but said alienating India would have serious consequences for Washington.
