Syrian rebels, who recently mounted a lightning offensive in the country and took control of Aleppo and Hama, were just about 20 kilometres from the capital city of Damascus on Saturday (December 7).
AFP cited Rebel commander Hassan Abdel Ghani, a senior member of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham-led alliance as saying “we are now less than 20 km from the southern gate of the capital Damascus”.
The alliance has already dealt significant blows to Iran and Russia-backed regime of President Bashar al-Assad.
According to Rami Abdel Rahman, who heads the Britain-based war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the insurgent forces have snatched control of the entirety of the Daraa province from the government.
