President Murmu, PM Modi welcome Angola's President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday welcomed Angolan President Joao Manuel Goncalves Lourenco at the Rashtrapati Bhawan during his four-day visit to India.

In his first bilateral visit to India, Lourenco will hold separate bilateral talks with PM Modi and President Murmu. The two sides are also expected to sign a number of agreements to shore up cooperation in several areas.

Lourenco paid tribute at Rajghat following his ceremonial welcome in New Delhi.

This is the first such diplomatic visit by the Angolan president after 38 years and comes on the heels of the two countries celebrating the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations later this year.

In October 2015, the Vice President of Angola, Manuel Vicente, visited India to participate in the 3rd India-Africa Summit, during which he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his visit to Johannesburg to attend the BRICS Summit, Angolan President Lourenco met PM Modi on July 26, 2018.

EAM S Jaishankar and Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio met in Kampala on January 18, 2024, on the sidelines of the NAM Ministerial meeting.

Angola is the chair of the African Union for this year.

There have been regular political exchanges between India and Angola, including several visits by their dignitaries such as the Agriculture Minister, Finance Minister, Health Minister etc.
