At least 32 people have died over the past two days as heavy rainfall triggered floods and landslides across several northeastern states, The Times of India reported.
Authorities across the region have been placed on high alert following Friday’s downpour, which the India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed to a depression over Bangladesh.
In Arunachal Pradesh, seven people were killed after a landslide on National Highway 13 swept a vehicle into a gorge between Bana and Seppa in East Kameng district on Friday night. Two more deaths were reported in a separate landslide in the Lower Subansiri district.
In Assam, intense rainfall caused severe urban flooding in Guwahati, bringing the city to a standstill. Five people were killed in a landslide in Bonda, on the outskirts of the city.
Schools and colleges in Guwahati and Kamrup district were closed on Saturday, and the state government announced special casual leave for employees required to travel to work.
Floods affected 12 districts in Assam on Saturday, with three people dying in flood-related incidents in Golaghat and Lakhimpur districts.
In Mizoram, the State Disaster Management Authority reported landslides at 113 locations across the state. Five fatalities were confirmed.
