 "Possible salmonella outbreak prompts recall of cucumbers from 26 US states, some provinces of Canada")
An Arizona-based produce company has recalled fresh American cucumbers from at least 26 US states and some parts of Canada after reports of salmonella contamination.
The company, SunFed, in an announcement posted via the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said that cucumbers dispatched between October 12 and November 26 were being recalled as they might be contaminated.
The states which bought the tainted vegetable are: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
In Canada, they were sold in the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Ontario and Saskatchewan.
SunFed President Craig Slate said, “As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers. We are working closely with authorities and the implicated ranch to determine the possible cause.”
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause infections in both humans and animals. It is commonly associated with foodborne illnesses that often cause infections.
Infections caused by Salmonella, known as salmonellosis, are typically spread through contaminated food and water. Common culprits include undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, and unpasteurized dairy products.
Symptoms of salmonellosis usually appear within six hours to six days after infection. They include diarrhoea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting.
Salmonella in the US
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella is responsible for approximately 1.35 million infections in the United States annually.
