Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday expressed grief and extended his condolences to the victims of the massive fire that broke out at a shopping mall in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka that killed at least 46 people.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, PM Modi also wished the injured a speedy recovery.
On Thursday night, a terrible fire left over 20 people seriously injured and at least 46 dead. Seventy individuals were evacuated by firefighters from the rooftop and various floors of the seven-story Green Cozy Cottage, including 42 who were unconscious.
“In a letter addressed to Hon’ble PM Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences on the loss of lives in the fire at the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall in Dhaka on 29 February 2024. He also wished speedy recovery to those injured,” Indian mission in Bangladesh said in a statement on social media platform X.
Around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, the “Kacchi Bhai” restaurant on the first story of the Green Cozy Cottage building caught fire. The fire swiftly spread to the upper floors, which housed several restaurants and a clothing store.
According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, PM Modi further stated in the letter that his thoughts and prayers are with the people of Bangladesh as India stands with them at this time of mourning.
Three people have been taken into custody since Friday night in connection with the incident.
