Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, while addressing Parliament on Friday, said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be the Guest of Honour at the nation’s 57th National Day celebrations.
He emphasised that it would be an honour for Mauritius to host Modi as the Guest of Honour.
Ramgoolam said, “I have great pleasure in informing the House that following my invitation, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, has kindly agreed to be the Guest of Honour for our National Day celebrations. It is indeed a singular privilege for our country to host such a distinguished personality who is doing us this honour, despite his very tight schedule and his recent visits to Paris and the United States.”
He further added that the visit serves as a testament to the strong and enduring relationship between the two countries.
“He has agreed to be here as our special guest. The visit of Modi is a testimony to the close relations between our two nations,” he said.
The country will celebrate its National Day next month on March 12.
President Murmu was chief guest last year
Last year, President Droupadi Murmu attended the 56th National Day of Mauritius as the Chief Guest. Upon her arrival, President Murmu was warmly received at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport by Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth.
Ramgoolam’s return
Navin Ramgoolam’s led alliance secured a decisive victory in Mauritius’ general elections in 2024, marking his return as Prime Minister after a decade.
After his win, PM Modi congratulated Ramgoolam on his election victory in Mauritius.
PM Modi expressed his eagerness to work closely with Dr. Ramgoolam to strengthen their “unique partnership.” Sharing a post on X, he wrote, “Had a warm conversation with my friend @Ramgoolam_Dr, congratulating him on his historic electoral victory. I wished him success in leading Mauritius and invited him to visit India. Looking forward to working together to strengthen our special partnership.”
