Sergio Gor, a close aide of US President Donald Trump, said on Saturday that the President considers Prime Minister Modi “a great and personal friend.”
Gor, who is visiting India with Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, is on a six-day trip to meet senior Indian officials.
“The statement underscores the importance both sides place on their growing ties,” an official said, noting that the visit reflects mutual respect and a shared commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation.
After his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor said, “President Trump considers PM Modi a great and personal friend,” adding that their talks covered trade, defence, technology, and the strategic importance of critical minerals.

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be here today. We just finished an incredible meeting with Prime Minister Modi, where we discussed bilateral issues, including defence, trade, and technology. We also discussed the importance of critical minerals to both of our nations. The US values its relationship with India, and under the strong leadership of President Donald J Trump and Prime Minister Modi, I’m optimistic about the days ahead for both of our nations,” Gor told reporters.
Relations between New Delhi and Washington have faced tension after President Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, including a 25 per cent duty on India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. India described the move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
However, recent phone conversations between Modi and Trump have raised hopes for progress in trade negotiations. India and the US have resumed talks on a bilateral trade deal after a brief pause, though both sides are still seeking a concrete breakthrough.
