Donald Trump said he is appointing his former lawyer, Lindsey Halligan, as US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, following the resignation of the office’s previous US attorney.
Trump, in a Truth Social post on Saturday after leaving the White House for Mount Vernon, described Halligan as someone who “will be Fair, Smart, and will provide, desperately needed, JUSTICE FOR ALL!”
He added, “Pam Bondi is doing a GREAT job as attorney general of the United States. She is very careful, very smart, loves our country, but needs a tough prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, like my recommendation, Lindsey Halligan, to get things moving.”
In an earlier post, Trump appeared to directly pressure Bondi, calling for Halligan – his special assistant and former beauty queen – to replace Erik Siebert, a former police officer and experienced prosecutor who resigned after finding no grounds to pursue New York Attorney General Letitia James.
Trump wrote, “We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW.”
Halligan had previously represented Trump in civil cases following the Mar-a-Lago search for classified documents.
It is not yet clear whether she will serve on an interim basis before a US Senate confirmation vote.
