Pakistan arrests top Al-Qaeda leader linked to Osama Bin Laden for sabotage plans

Pakistani counter-terrorism authorities have arrested Amin ul Haq, a senior leader of Al-Qaeda known for his close association with Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

According to a Dawn report, the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) in Punjab province has filed a legal case against ul Haq, alleging his involvement in plotting sabotage aimed at important installations in the region.

“In a significant breakthrough in the fight against terrorism, CTD, in collaboration with intelligence agencies, successfully apprehended Amin ul Haq, a senior leader of Al-Qaeda,” Dawn quoted the department’s spokesperson as saying in a statement.

The statement added that ul Haq was apprehended from the Sarai Alamgir town of the Gujrat district of Punjab.

The statement further said that Amin ul Haq had been a close associate of Osama bin Laden since 1996 and had participated in numerous terrorist activities. It noted that ul Haq’s name was listed among the global terrorists by the United Nations.

“The apprenehsion of Amin ul Haq is an important development in the ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in Pakistan and around the world,” the CTD added.

The CTD also revealed that the captured terrorist had been plotting a “large-scale terrorist operation” within the country.

Bin Laden was killed in 2011 during a US raid on his hideout in the Pakistani city of Abbottabad.
