'Only to vote for Kamala Harris': Ex-US President Jimmy Carter on why he looks forward to be 100

Former US President Jimmy Carter has said that the only reason he looks forward to his 100th birthday is to be able to vote for Kamala Harris.

Carter, 99, has been in the hospice care for more than a year now. He is the oldest living President of the United States.

Carter will turn 100 on October 1. The voting for the US presidential election will take place on November 5. The mail-in ballot, however, can be done as early as two months before the election day. Considering Carter’s advanced age and poor health, he is likely to opt for a mail-in ballot.

When asked about his plans on turning 100, Carter said he was looking forward to vote for Harris.

“I’m only trying to make it [to 100th birthday] to vote for Kamala Harris,” said Carter, as per Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.

In May, Carter had voted in the Georgia Democratic primaries. His grandson, Jason Carter, said at the time that voting was important to his grandfather.

“He’s not going to miss an election. It’s important to him. I mean, that’s the person he is,” said Jason at the time.

Carter was the President of the United States during 1977-81. Prior to joining politics, he was a peanut farmer and served in the US Navy during 1946-53. After retiring from active politics, he got involved in humanitarian and public causes and has been widely appreciated for his austere ways. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to find solutions to international conflicts.
