An off-duty NYPD officer, identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, was among five people killed in a mass shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday evening.
Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a four-year veteran of the police force, is being hailed as a hero.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams remembered Officer Islam as a devoted public servant and family man. “We lost four souls to another senseless act of gun violence , including a member of the New York City Police Department, Officer Islam,” he said at a press conference. “He was saving lives, he was protecting New Yorkers… He loved this city, and everyone we spoke with stated he was a person of faith and a person who believed in God.”
Islam is survived by his wife, eight months pregnant, and two sons. Mayor Adams said he met with the grieving family and told them, “He was a hero, and we admire him for putting his life on the line.”
The NYPD also paid tribute, stating, “He was protecting New Yorkers from danger when his life was tragically cut short today.”
The shooting unfolded around 6:30 pm inside a Park Avenue office complex that houses several financial firms and the NFL. The Fire Department of New York said emergency crews responded swiftly to reports of gunfire.
The suspect, identified as Shane Tamura of Nevada, was later found dead from what authorities believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement sources told CNN that five people in total—including the gunman—died in the incident.
